Synology BSM 1.3-65644

Today Synology released the latest version of their latest BeeStation operating system, the BSM 1.3.
The new version has only several updates, but apart from that it is also announcing the soon to be released upcoming new BeeStation model, the BeeStation Plus.

Announcement of the upcoming new BeeStation Plus model
Version: 1.3-65644
(2025-05-08)
BeeStation OS 1.3
This version includes the following applications:
- BeeFiles 1.3.0-10921
- BeePhotos 1.3.0-10110
What's new
- Added an option to configure the retention period for internal restore points, helping balance storage usage and data protection. Make sure to enable internal restore points to protect your BeeStation.
- Added support for selecting BeeProtect backup time slot. The system automatically schedules the backup within the selected slot to optimize performance.
- Added support for Plex Media Server, allowing users to organize and stream personal media collections across various devices. (BeeStation Plus only)
Fixed issues
- This version includes system stability optimizations and minor bug fixes.
Apart from a few fixes, the main new feature that is coming with both the BSM 1.3 and exclusively on the upcoming Plus model, is PLEX support!
This is the first for Synology in terms of their Bee devices and with good reason as well. The upcoming new 8TB Plus model will be run by a very capable and familiar Intel Celeron J4125 CPU.
This is the same CPU that is present on multiple existing "plus" Synology NAS models, like DS224+ or even the upcoming DS225+ and DS425+.

Unlike the DS devices, with multiple bays, the BeeStation Plus is still a single bay packed with Synology HAT3310 8TB 7200 RPM drive.
Regardless of that the fact that unlike its predecessor with Realtek RTD1619B, 1GB of RAM, and a 5400 RPM 4TB disk, the Plus model will now have 4GB of memory on top of the CPU and disk upgrade.
All this is more than enough to turn the new Plus model into a fast and capable home media center server thanks to the Intel QuickSync feature that will allow for on-device hardware transcoding in case the Plex client is unable to stream the content and decode it correctly.
Will BSM have its app store??
So what method of installation will we be using on the upcoming Plus model to get Plex running? Well, unlike the DSM NAS devices that are running with the Package Center to install and extend the functionalities of the device, BSM presently has no similar function.
With BSM 1.3, the BeeStation Plus will have a new Settings section called Integration that will come prepopulated with the option to install a PLEX media server.

We can guess that the version of the PLEX server will be the same as it is on the DSM side, which means version 1.41.9 or better (by the time the Plus model arrives).
This means that the "app store" as such will not be an option, but it also means that Synology will not stop there as well. This is a welcome addition, as one of the top three requests after the initial rollout of the BeeStation, was more capacity, media manager, and redundancy.
The last option is still missing, but considering how BSM is being developed as well as the fact that just one year after the unveiling of the 4TB BeeStation we got a much more capable version both in hardware and software, only shows that Synology will not let go of this platform any time soon.
BeeProtect changes
BeeProtect also got some new options with this new version of BSM. For anyone unfamiliar with the BeeProtect service, it is Synology's paid cloud backup solution for the BeeStation.

BeeProtect was first presented in the previous 1.2 version of the BSM

While the BeeStation has other backup options such as backing up to a USB drive or Synology NAS, the BeeProtect is there for users who want a hassle-free solution that is also off-site.
With BSM 1.3 we now get the option to configure when the backup will be triggered which is a small but welcome configuration setting. While "daily" backup towards the BeeProtect cloud is fine, it is also great to have the option when we want the content to be backed up.
The BSM 1.3 version is available for download now, with the PLEX feature only reserved for the soon-to-be-released Plus model.
