Compatible NAS models for the HAT3310 16TB SATA drive (March 2024)

Just last year in May, Synology announced their HAT3300 series of NAS-class drives as a counteroffer to their more expensive HAT5300 enterprise series. Today, we have some changes in this particular 3300 lineup with some new models.

Review of the initial HAT3300 drives

HAT3310 is the new sub-class of NAS drives that will cover capacities of 8, 12, and 16TB.

Officially called HAT3310-8T and HAT3310-12T, these new drives will be, unlike the 4 and 6TB models, shifting from Seagate to Toshiba brand, same as their HAT5300 models.

The reason for this is Synology's cost optimization strategy in response to the global price increase from hard drive vendors. Speaking about the cost, the price will depend on the region, but the new HAT3310 drives will be a bit more expensive than the previous models, about 10-12€.

Specifications and compatibility

There are some slight changes when we talk about specifications for both 8 and 12-TB models. The 8TB model has been moved from 5400 RPM to 7200, and following that the speed has jumped to 260MB/s. Similarly, the 12TB model has more cache, and higher speed as well.

These models are also using CMR technology, offering consistent performance over time.

Specifications for the new HAT3310 models

Same as before, the HAT3310 will include the benefits of seamless firmware updates directly from DSM, and full support and new changes that might be implemented over time by the said OS.

In terms of compatibility, the drives will be compatible with the following NAS models with new ones coming at a later date:

  • 24 series:DS224+, DS124
  • 23 series:RS2423RP+, RS2423+, DS1823xs+, DS923+, DS723+, DS423+, DS423, DS223, DS223j

Current (Jan 2024) supported lineup of NAS models
⚠️
NOTE: Please note that to use these drives your NAS will have to be on DSM 7.2 or newer! Some older models that support DSM 7.1.1 will not work with these drives!

While some x18 models are missing from the list, the official stance of Synology regarding the use of these drives inside models that are not listed is as follows:

Following the question of what would happen if a user still decides to use the drives on a NAS that is not on the list, the following response came from Synology:

If anyone wants to ensure that their model of NAS is included in the official list, they can submit an official compatibility request using the following URL.

Finally, same as the rest of the HAT3300 drives, these come with a fixed 3-year warranty from Synology.

The 8T and 12TB models are already available, with the 16TB model coming later in Q1 of 2024.
