UPDATE: 26/09/2020 - You know that feeling when you are finally able to do something that you always wanted? Well, Configuration Backup and Restore just got A LOT more powerful. FULL Bare-metal restore anyone? O yeah ;). Keep in mind that this might change until finall version.
UPDATE: 25/09/2020 - Added 3rd party app support details at the end of this article
UPDATE: 11/09/2020 - I have upgraded one of my RS3614RPxs NAS units to DSM7. Zero problems so far. In place upgrade took about 4min total including update of packages. Docker and VMM along side all containers and VMs are running with no problems at all. Managed to register with new build in services (Hybrid Share and Active Insight), also, with no issues at all. Can't share any more details but so far, everything is running smooth. One more thing, a 3rd party collection of tools (mc, iperf, etc) are all running even though Package center is reporting that they need a "repair". I will leave it as it is for now, just so they don't brake :)
UPDATE: 09/09/2020 (23:00 CEST) - Still having fun with this VDSM version of DSM7. Its search is so fast that it reminds me of macOS Spotlight. It's a shame we can't share any details as of yet, but I am writing and preparing materials that will be published as soon as we hit public beta. I will say, the wait was worth it and it will only get better.
UPDATE: 08/09/2020 (14:00 CEST) - I will just say, wow. Works great so far. Fast and stable as hell. UI is responding in an instant. So far, wow.
Finally! We have waited and waited, but DSM 7 public preview is finally here!
Announced initially last year Dec 31st, Synology opened up public preview signups for their upcoming DSM 7 NAS OS. Unfortunately, on Feb 13th, we got info that the preview version will be delayed.
For the past 9 months, we haven't had any intel on any new features apart from those that were presented during last year's worldwide conference and some webinars in 2020, more on those here.
But the wait is finally over. Sep 8th, 2020 Synology opened up access to DSM 7 preview to about 6500 users that initially signed up.
Go to https://event.synology.com/en-global/dsm_preview and you should see the 3rd step active now.
Log into the site with your Synology Account
Bit of EULA
NOTE - Be sure to read this warning!!!
Synology Community site has a new button for DSM7 preview discussions as well.
More models will be added but keep an eye out that these models are not yet ready:
FS6400, FS3600, SA3600, SA3200D, RC18015xs+, DS1520+, DS920+, DS720+, DS420+, DS220+, DS220j
Well, it is time! Let's see how this bad boy will behave.
There is also a list of apps that are compatible with DSM7 but I will not post those as per agreement.
3rd party app support
As I have mentioned, there is no 3rd party app support as of just now. Some will work, some will not, but if you are a developer you will be please to know that Synology has opened a channel that you can use to submit your request and get access to resources needed to start building your apps for DSM7.
In order to get going follow these steps:
