Synology FS200T overview

At the opening day of the 2025 Computex Expo, which began today, Synology unveiled a lineup of upcoming new devices, models from existing series, and some brand-new products.

The 2025 Computex is soon here and #Synology will be there to present new hardware, software, and services.

Although most of the SOHO, prosumer, and mid-range models are familiar, we also had the chance to see another announced model that received a certain 'promotion' this year, if we can call it that.

In addition to the popular two, four, five, and eight-bay devices, Synology has also refreshed and rebranded the smallest member of their DS lineup, the DS620slim.

Successor of the DS620slim, here is FS200T, the smallest member of the FlashStation lineup

Named the FS200T, this 2.5" 6-bay device has advanced in the world of Synology, transitioning from a desktop DS series to the distinguished FlashStation lineup. Indeed, the smallest member of the entire portfolio is here to stay, now with a new name, category, and several upgrades.

All-flash design for quiet operations at home or in compact workspaces

While the FS-series presently only has four rack-based models, the FS200T is about to change this.

Apart from its new name, the FS200T received several upgrades compared to its predecessor. While it still features an Intel Celeron CPU instead of an AMD Ryzen, Synology has upgraded from the J3355 to the popular J4125 quad-core CPU. The addition of two extra cores is a welcomed enhancement, and additionally, the RAM has been upgraded from DDR3 to DDR4, starting with double the amount, at 4GB.

The new FS200T all-flash desktop version of a NAS that is highly portable if needed

The FS200T maintains its compact size with a depth of under 18cm, identical in external appearance to the DS620slim model. It continues to support only 2.5" drives, but it's important to note that the new 2025 disk policy applies here as well. As a result, due to its new name and disk policy, the FS200T is compatible only with Synology's officially supported drives. For now, these are the SAT5200 series enterprise drives, with the list expected to expand to include more third-party vendors over time.

The device allows for hot-swapping of drives in all six bays. Although this model is designed to be super silent and cool, the minimal noise (around 20dB) will come only from the single 80mm vent at the back.

Regarding the back of the unit, the FS200T retains the exact port setup: dual USB 3.2 Gen 1 and LAN ports. There is one notable upgrade though: like all other X25 models, the FS200T now features a 2.5GbE port alongside the standard 1GbE port, similar to the configuration on the DS425+ and the DS725+.

Miniature all-flash storage for enthusiasts

Thanks to its compact size, the FS200T is an ideal desktop solution or even a portable device. With an all-flash setup, it eliminates concerns about data damage during transport and can even be used on the go, such as in a mobile home.

Its low heat, minimal noise, compact form, enhanced performance, and improved network connectivity make this little NAS a prime choice for home users, small office content creators, and other enthusiasts.

The price point of this new model could be a challenge due to its disk compatibility. It supports only the Synology SAT5200 models, and depending on the number and capacity of the drives, the total setup cost might deter some users until more drives become officially available.

The price range for these drives spans from €160 for the 480GB version to €1900 for the 7TB version. For optimal use, it might be advisable to employ this model as a NAS for on-device editing with smaller disks, while using a larger model with 3.5" drives for backup and archiving.

In any case, the new FS200T will be available in the second half of 2025. We'll strive to obtain one for testing, but considering its CPU, RAM, and network upgrades, it's comparable to existing or upcoming models. For instance, the DS224+, DS225+, and DS425+ all feature the same CPU, RAM, and/or 2.5GbE network. If you're considering a compact NAS and are unsure about its performance, reviewing these alternatives can provide you with a solid understanding.
